Local Scene: Open Mic Night at Pangaea Cafe
Flickr VideoWednesday, my girl, brother and I decided to go out to eat in search of healthier options for dinner. We read some reviews about Pangaea Cafe, stating they carried some vegan offerings that were delicious. I’m not vegan (which I proved later on with a tasty chocolate dipped waffle cone from Gunthers across the way), but I’m down to try some alternative meals, especially if it may mean less calories in the belly.
The food was indeed delicious. They have their regular menu of sandwiches, salads, etc, plus the small vegan menu. I had the vegan spicy “beef” empanada and what I believe was a kind of Indian rice. Never the less, it was all good. The “beef” empanada did not actually have beef in it, but could have fooled me. Probably not the healthiest of choices, but I think it is one of my new favorite dishes, vegan or not.
While eating the owner, who is a really cool, friendly guy, told us it was open mic night, and they were having a band from Washington play for the evening. Soon after our dinner was over, the entertainment began. The six-man ensemble, Yogoman Burning Band played a couple of songs to get things warmed up, and they were awesome. The music was a little bit Reggae, Ska, and Jazzy/Blues. Part of the open mic atmosphere led them to leave a song open to crowd participation. The host of the night led the way onto the mic and I followed, as the groove being laid down was too funky to pass up. I had a lot of fun.
The rest of the night continued the good energy, as local poets, singers, and musicians of all ages and background shared their creative talents. Then Yogoman Burning Band came back and finished things off with a full on 40 minute set. It was definitely the best dining experience I’ve had in a while.
